Who Are 'Fangirls' That Defend China From Hong Kong Protesters?

Dec.23 — Zak Dychtwald, founder of Young China Group, a think tank and consultancy focusing on China’s emerging identity on the world stage and the evolving East and West millennial mindset, talks about China’s ‘fangirls.’ Ever since anti-government demonstrations in Hong Kong turned violent, China’s celebrity-obsessed young generation have patrolled social media, ready to pounce on perceived slights and defend their motherland. Nicknamed “fangirls” because they exhibit the same fervor most often reserved for pop-culture icons, these women and men flood social media with slogans and memes shaming brands.
