"What up Recast family! Sen. Joe Manchin says he’s noncommittal on the $1.75 trillion reconciliation framework, and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer promises to bring another voting rights bill up in the Senate this week. But today we open things up with a focus on Election Day in Virginia.

Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin are the headliners in Virginia’s gubernatorial contest.

Most polls show it’s a toss-up between two white male candidates. Each has spent the closing weeks enmeshed in the latest culture wars dominating American politics, including debates over how much parents should be involved in determining student curricula and whether critical race theory should be taught in public schools.

Often overlooked in this election is the fact that history will be made — regardless of the victor at the top of the ticket.

Democrat Hala Ayala, who identifies as Afro-Latina, Irish and Lebanese, has served in the Virginia Legislature for two terms. Republican Winsome Sears, a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates, is Black and was born in Jamaica. Each is vying to become the first woman of color to be elected statewide in their race for lieutenant governor.

In fact it’s been decades since Virginia has had a woman — of any race — serve in statewide office: Mary Sue Terry, a Democrat, was the last. She was first elected as the state’s attorney general in 1986."
